Ann, Edinburgh’s community Nurse of the Year.

Congratulations Ann, Edinburgh’s community Nurse of the Year. We caught up with Ann on her win.

How long have you been working with the Guild?

I joined the Scottish Nursing Guild in 2016, firstly part time then full time.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Working in the community puts you in exceptional circumstances, some of it working in very challenging areas, supporting people who have complex needs; as a nurse this is so satisfying. Working for the Guild provides these opportunities and that reward.

What attracted you to join the Guild?

The variety of work offered, being able to pick and choose when you work. That fits in with most lifestyles, whether you’re a busy parent or a singleton with lots of time or just looking for a change. The pay rates are incomparable and there is a quick turnaround from submitting your timesheet to getting the money in your bank.

How do you feel about being our Nurse of the Year?

Shocked. I was speechless, for once! 😆

Receiving this recognition is so humbling and gratifying. Of course, you need the back up to maintain this, and I find everyone in the SNG office always available and incredibly supportive as are all of my colleagues with whom I have worked. Also, every unique amazing individual we have been able to support. I have the utmost respect for and thank them all.

What do you love about being a nurse?

In all the years I have been qualified I have never lost my passion or compassion for helping and supporting people. I have met and worked with some inspiring people, it is very rewarding, and I feel privileged to be in this position. I will work with The Guild in this job for as long as I am able to, it is very fulfilling.

Have you learned anything new whilst working during the pandemic?

As human beings, at times, we can all feel isolated, lonely and anxious without pandemics, but this has impacted more so on many of our clients. This particular situation has taught me that despite the risks and adversities the pandemic poses, we can and have actually seen people through probably the most difficult times in their (and our) lives and hopefully we are nearing the end.

What made you continue to work during a pandemic?

Most of the people we work with are very vulnerable, not able to understand the pandemic or why it has happened. This is on top of their learning disability or mental health issues and put simply “we are needed.”
