To become a nurse, there are various qualifications you will need to obtain. In many cases, most countries also have a registering body you will need to join to become a fully qualified nurse, which is no different in Ireland, which has the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

Nursing Degree

Many nurses become qualified by completing a university degree – this should provide you with the skills, knowledge, and aptitude to become a nurse. Most courses require a clinical component to be completed – this could be in various settings such as hospitals, psychiatric wards, community centres, GP practices or another facility. Qualified nurses tend to specialise in one of the four areas of nursing:

Mental health nursing
Children’s nursing
Learning disability nursing

Entry requirements for the university degree will usually require three UK A-levels or a C3 in two higher papers and a D3 in four papers in the Irish Leaving Certificate. You must complete at least one laboratory science, math and either English or Irish.

Alternative routes into nursing

If you don’t have the grades to get into your nursing degree straight away, most universities offer foundation courses for students who don’t have the required academic background. For mature students who wish to get into nursing, they are required to take a Public Appointment Service exam and then submit their application through the Central Applications Office.

Registering as a nurse in Dublin

The nursing authority in Ireland is the NMBI which stands for Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland . Anyone who wishes to become a nurse in Ireland must be approved by this service. Before you can secure a job, you may have to go through a lengthy process and pay for the application fees – you should plan for a minimum of six months for this to be approved.
