Why choose Inverness for your next nursing role?

Inverness is a city in the Scottish Highlands on Scotland’s northeast coast, renowned for its natural beauty and culture. With a wealth of historic monuments, scenery and wildlife to enjoy, Inverness is a haven for living and working alike – making it a great place to choose for your next nursing role.

In our guide, we discuss why you should choose Inverness for your next nursing role – whether you’ve just begun your nursing journey, or you’re a registered nurse looking for the next step in your career.

Becoming a nurse in Inverness

Education

There are various routes into nursing – many people opt to do a nursing degree or, alternatively, an advanced apprenticeship approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Both routes will teach you the academic theories behind nursing, as well as the clinical experience.

If you choose to complete a degree, you can choose to specialise in a sector of nursing:

  • Paediatric nursing
  • Adult nursing
  • Mental health nursing
  • Disability nursing

To undertake your nursing degree, you will need three A-levels in one Science, Maths and English. Or a C3 in two higher papers and a D3 in four papers in the Irish Leaving Certificate. If you want to study in Inverness, the University of the Highlands and Islands is a great choice for a nursing student.

RNDA

Alternatively, you could pursue a Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships (RNDA) – this route equips you with both the academic study and clinical experience you need to get into nursing.

Registering as a nurse in Inverness

Once you’ve completed your nursing education, the next step will be deciding which professional setting you’d like to work in. This also includes which location you’d like to be working and living in. There are various reasons why you may want to move to Inverness, such as:

  • Picturesque – the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands is reason alone for people to relocate here, as Inverness is surrounded by the River Ness, many mountains and beautiful beaches.
  • History – Inverness is often referred to as the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands – meaning history and culture is in abundance in this city, such as the Old Town, which features the 19th century Inverness Cathedral, and 18th century Old High Church.
  • Affordability – in comparison to the rest of the UK, Inverness is considerably more affordable when renting or buying a house, meaning the cost of living should be lower.
