What does a mental health nurse do?

Your role as a mental health nurse is to provide support to individuals living with a wide range of mental health conditions. This involves numerous responsibilities from helping them to come to terms with and understand their diagnosis to assisting them in developing effective coping strategies to lead fulfilling lives.

You can specialise in working with certain types of people, like children or adults, or become a specialist in a particular disability.

As a mental health nurse, it’s important that you can work as part of a team as you will often be working alongside psychiatrists, general practitioners, social workers and other healthcare professionals. It’s also important to be adaptable as you may work in different locations, such as patients’ homes, healthcare centres, or hospitals.

In a mental health nurse job with the Scottish Nursing Guild, the amount you earn depends on your specialism, and experience. You can see a full breakdown of hourly pay and holiday pay on our pay rates page.
